Things to do in Portland, Jamaica : Reach Falls & Boston Beach

Portland, Jamaica is definitely one of the island’s best secrets! There are many things to do, especially if you are madly in love with the water like I am. I had the pleasure of taking a second trip to Portland with the @tekatripja (check them out on Instagram) team, to visit Reach Falls & Boston Beach.

Our first stop was, Reach Falls! The entry fee for adults is $500 JMD whilst the cost for children is $250 JMD.

Here area few items I wouldn’t advise you to visit Reach Falls without:

Waterproof phone case

Swimwear

Towel

Water Shoes

Camera

I’m sure by now you’ve all seen the viral video from The Insider showing their team risking it all & diving into a rabbit hole. Yes, rabbit hole. Wait, let me show you exactly what I’m talking about. Here’s Jev doing it for the gram!

Now how did we get here? Through Hills & Valleys too *Buju Banton voice*. Stay tuned to Jev Journalist’s YouTube page to see our video of the journey, subscribe to his page here. Now, the hike to the rabbit hole, was quite the workout. Had me feeling like the entry fee was really a gym fee. However, there are spots where you could actually take a swim for a bit instead of walking. If you can’t swim, like me, you’re in for a workout! I wouldn’t advise you attempt this walk barefoot as there are some areas that are extremely slippery. So, if you’re not careful you could hurt yourself. Safety first!

Okay, enough of the mechanics, here’s the fun part – The Rabbit Hole! Your tour guide will be more than happy to show you how it’s done first, and will wait below for you. If you can’t swim, don’t worry, it’s pretty shallow and your tour guide will be waiting to help you out through the other side. Go ahead, take a dip! After fun in the rabbit hole, our group hiked back to the main attraction, the falls. Where we took lots of photos, sorta like this.

Next stop? Boston Beach! Now you’ve heard of the famous Boston Jerk, right? Of course, we had to give it a try. Jerk is my travel food staple and I can’t go on a long day trip without trying the jerk pork at a local jerk center.

My Adventist family… Just ignore that pork part! So we tried the Jerk Chicken, Jerk Pork & Jerk Sausage and I can definitely see what all the hype is about! The Jerk sauce was THE SAUCE. It came to slay! The aroma alone sealed the deal for me, a small tear fell from my left eye. The sauce was smokey and rich with a well appreciated KICK. It was hot, but I couldn’t stop eating it. This was definitely my best jerk stop in awhile.

The entry fee to Boston Beach was 300 JMD and we were allowed to take food on to the property, so that’s where we enjoyed our jerk. Enough about food, let’s get to the adventure! You guys remember I can’t swim, right? Well life is about living without limits! So I tested mine! I joined the group in walking to the other side of the beach for picturesque views & insta-worthy photos. Did I mention I walked through water? That was the only way to get to the other side. I’ve never been to a beach with such shallow water for such a long distance. My water shoes came in handy because things get rocky when you’re out that far. The water was about up to my waist, the whole journey, so the walk through is doable. We’ll show you how its done in our YouTube video.

Let me show you what the other side looked like.

Beautiful right?

If you’re brave enough you can jump,at your own risk of course. Nature doesn’t come with lifeguards!

Boston beach gets 2 thumbs up from us! I definitely suggest this stop to my readers who love a little adventure. Follow me on instagram @yourtravellingpen and stay tuned to our YouTube for vlogs from each stop!
